Morning devotion: Read Psalm 119

Psalms 119:150  ¶They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law. 151  Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth.

Our lives are filled with those who know not the Lord Jesus Christ. As a result, we view, hear and in some cases experience violence, immorality, and temptations. David said: “they draw nigh.”

The reason for their behaviour is that “they are far from” the law or the word of God and follow mischief. That word mischief is also translated as wickedness and more often, lewdness.

I read a news article about a popular movie company making a movie called “Cuties” with adolescent girls operating in a provocative climate of lewdness. People are accepting this kind of thing.

I read another article about a senator proposing a bill that would negate the pedophile registry for those who commit such crimes if they are committed with persons less than ten years their age. That means a 25-year-old can harm a 16-year-old and not pay the price for his actions.

I read another article about people violating their own laws for self-indulgence while others suffer under the restraints of emergency law. This is prolific with the government officials and the elite. Try getting your hair done.

I read another article about the riots and people being hurt and even murdered and no one is held responsible.

The list goes on and on, we see it in government, hollywood, sports and social media everywhere.

I understand why David said, Psalms 119:150  ¶They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law. 151  Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth.

The blessing in these verses is the drawing nigh of the Lord. David knew the Lord was near him. He knew God was close at hand and His word was truth.

James 4:8a Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.

While others are drawing nigh to mischief the born-again believer draws night to the Lord. There is a vast difference between the two. While the unsaved, urnigerate and godless people have lost the sense of God in the heart and conscience and the culture progresses toward evil, we can say with David, they draw nigh to mischief, but we will draw nigh to God.

It is good and right and righteous to draw night to the Lord.

Ps 73:28  But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Ps 145:18  The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

If the devil and the world can get you to capitulate just one inch, he knows you will surrender more if tempted. As with Peter, he wants to sift you as wheat.

Luke 22:31  And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

It comes down to this, love the world or love Jesus. You cannot serve both.

James 4:4  Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. 5  Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? 6  But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8  Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9  Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Draw nigh to mischief or draw nigh to God.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
