Morning Devotion: Read Psalm 120

Psalms 120:2  Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.

We dwell in a world of people with unclean lips. Lips of deceit and lying are prevalent around us. Isaiah said it best.

Isaiah 6:5  ¶Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

Had it not been for the Lord, Isaiah would have not known of his own deceitful lips. Since he knew the Lord, his assessment of self was one of humility, he knew what he was and he knew what man is like.

David, being Isaiah’s predecessor also knew and cried to the Lord, “Deliver my soul” – “from lying lips.” He knew he was subject to lying lips and was surrounded by those of lying and deceitful tongues.

David, as with us all want to live in a world were false witnesses are not. We desire everyone to be truthful with us. It is a blessing to hear truth and see righteousness in and among our peers.

Proverbs 12:17  ¶He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.

Proverbs 14:5  ¶A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

Psalms 120:2  Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. 3  What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue? 4  Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

What shall be given? What shall be done to the false tongue? The answer is nothing good. To the villainous deceitful person who utters false things whether by flatteries or outright lies, nothing good awaits. To the one who embellishes for self glory or for the ruin of others, no good is predicted.

What shall be given and what shall be done? Sharp arrows and coals of junipers are the answer.

The Lord says: Deuteronomy 32:22  For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. 23  I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.

Revelation 21:27  And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Revelation 22:15  For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

The coals of the juniper burn hot and stink. The arrows of the almighty are sharp and piercing.

Lying and deceit are from the heart. The heart needs to be changed for the words of the mouth to change. God is the only one who can change the heart through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalms 51:10  Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Ephesians 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The choice is still yours,
