Morning Devotion: Read Psalm 120

Psalms 120:5  ¶Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! 6  My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. 7  I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

The peace of this world is much different than the peace of the Lord.

John 14:27  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

David realized he lived in a world and with people who did not know that kind of peace. He describes those without peace as those of Mesech and Kedar.

“Mesech was a son of Japheth; and the name here signifies his descendants, the Mosques, who occupied that wild mountain region which lies between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Kedar, again, was a son of Ishmael; and the name here signifies his descendants, the wandering tribes, whose “hand is against every man, and every man’s hand against them.”

Genesis 16:12  And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Both were identified as a fierce barbarous people. Imagine having the description of Mesech and Kedar added to your name. “Oh, that person is like Kedar, you cannot trust what he says.”

In our world we find many hate peace and many talk of war when peace is mentioned. Just look at the news and see the hatred and anger and talk of burning and war and the overthrow of governments. You will see, they talk of a different peace than what God desires. This bothered David so much that he said “Woe is me.” C. H. Spurgeon

Coupled with the lying lips and deceitful tongues, the lack of peace has a profound effect on David.

I am reminded of Matthew 5:3 & 4 “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

Are men no longer interested in being poor and humble in spirit anymore? Do men no longer mourn over sin and abuses in their personal lives and the lives of others around them? David would say no, they do not. In fact, they want the opposite.

My friend, only the Lord God can change the heart and bring peace. Only the Lord can give a peace that passes all understanding.

Isaiah 57:19  I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him.

Philippians 4:7  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Let the word of God encourage you this morning.

Psalms 37:1  ¶<<A Psalm of David.>> Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

2  For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.

3  Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.

4  Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5  Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

6  And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.

7  ¶Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

8  Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

The choice is still yours,
