Morning Devotion: Read Psalm 123

Psalms 123:1  ¶<<A Song of degrees.>> Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens. 2  Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us. 3  Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. 4  Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

As we saw yesterday; the eyes of the servant look upon the master, they wait for his every movement or gesture of indication and command. So we wait upon our Lord.

Nothing should be more important than waiting on God. Isaiah 40:31  But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

However, David also indicates that the waiting is for mercy as well. Why would a Christian have to wait for mercy? Does he not already have mercy from God? Has he not already been granted mercy when he was saved by the Almighty?

We as believers are prone to wander, prone to leave the God we love. We are prone to follow malevolent ways and take our eyes off of the Lord. We can be filled with contempt.

Contempt – The act of despising; the act of viewing or considering and treating as mean, vile and worthless; disdain; hatred of what is mean or deemed vile. This word is one of the strongest expressions of a mean opinion which the language affords.

David knew he was prone to this and pleaded for God’s mercy for his personal failures. He made no excuse for his actions. He knew they were wrong. He simply went to the Lord for forgiveness and mercy.

What about you, do you have scorn for others? Is your heart dissident to the things of God and scornful of others? Do you have contempt in your heart towards others?

Do you find it hard to love your enemies? Matthew 5:44  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;…

Do you find yourself wandering from the things of God?

Be like David, go to the Lord and seek His mercy on your life. If you are not saved, a born-again Christian, seek the Lord Jesus for salvation.

The choice is still yours,
