Morning Devotion: Questions and Answers

Question: Are there hindrances to my prayer? Answer: Yes

There are many hindrances to prayer and they can be categorized under one word, sin.

Psalms 66:18  If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

Simply being unsaved and without Christ as personal Lord and Saviour is a hinderance to prayer. As a child of God, we have every right and privilege to go to Him in prayer.

Hebrews 4:14  Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

A wonderful prayer that God always hears is the cry for salvation in Christ Jesus. From that point on, as a child of God we have access to Him when ever we desire.

However, there are other hindrances to prayer.

Failure to head the word of God is a hindrance to prayer

Proverbs 28:9  He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

Sinful motives are a hindrance to prayer

James 4:3  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

Unforgiveness is a hindrance to prayer. Is there anyone you have failed to forgive?

Mark 11:24  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. 25  And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26  But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Lack of compassion is a hindrance to prayer.

Proverbs 21:13  Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.

Stubbornness is a hindrance to prayer.

Zechariah 7:12  Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts. 13  Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:

For those who are married, having an improper relationship with your spouse is a hindrance to prayer.

1 Peter 3:7  Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Unconfessed sin is a hindrance to prayer.

Isaiah 59:2  But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

We must remember, prayer is always directed to a God. God who is Holy and righteous and completely separated from sin; sin in any form is an afront the one to whom we pray.

Make sure any and all sin is confessed to God at the onset of prayer.

1 John 1:8  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The choice is still yours,
