Morning Devotion: Ten Commandments
Exodus 20:1 ¶And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Israel had been redeemed out of Egypt and were on their way to the Promise land. We must remember there were a multitude of people, over 600,000 men not including women and children. That is a lot of people walking through the wilderness without some thing to govern them. They had the Lord and they had Moses, but they needed law. They had no law established; they were living under Egyptian law. Now they were on their own and needed law.
We all need law, some type of law for without law there is chaos. Without law, man will do that which his heart desires. That is not a bad thing if the heart desires that which is good. If the heart is wicked the desires will be wicked. Let me assure you, the heart of man is wicked. Just look around you.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
While we all think we have a good heart, we can be deceived by our own heart.
I was going door to door handing out tracts the other day and came across a door with a placard that read, “There is no hatred here.” As I looked, I saw symbols all around the door, LBGTQ, Islam, Rham, New age, Buddha, Satan, and all sorts. The idea was given that everything is accepted in that house. It was clear that all gods were accepted there. What that house did not know was that Satan was the perpetrator of all the ideologies depicted on that door. Satan hates. The house was exactly the opposite of what it portrayed. They were deceived. Satan portrays himself as a good god.
Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
I Peter 5:8 ¶Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Jesus was speaking about Satan and described him as such: John 8:44… “He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
The first thing God did with Israel when they left the false gods of Egypt was to give them truth. Instead of following false gods, they were to follow the one true God who saved them. The gods of Egypt were destroying them while the true God of heaven saved them. That is one reason why God gave them ten commandments.
The first related directly to the issue of false gods. Exodus 20:1 ¶And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
There are a lot of gods that people follow today. The god of money, the god of assets like cars and homes and boats and campers and stuff; the god of sports and entertainment; the god of sex and lust, the god of booze and drugs or the god of family and the list goes on and on. How many folks have forsaken God for these things? And, what about the god of self?
Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
I have found that there are folks who will forsake church just so they can stay home or travel with family, family was their god. Or those who forsake church for a ball game or hunting or camping or a race track and that list goes on and on as well. What about those who forsake God for convenience or time or work or pleasure; they have set another god before God.
You see, false gods will draw you away from the true loving, kind and gracious God of heaven and all eternity. God gave this commandment to start Israel out right on their journey. As you read your bible, you will see, every time they embraced a false god, it led to trouble and anguish and pain and even death.
Just as you did with your children, in saying don’t go there or do that, for their safety and own good, so God did the same with Israel. Exodus 20:1 ¶And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
With that in mind, we know that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh and wants to give you eternal life. He wants to redeem you from the false god of this world and save your soul. Would you let him?
The choice is still yours,
