Morning Devotion: Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:4  Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5  Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6  And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

The first commandment is in Exodus 20:3  “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”

We saw that those who place anything in front of the living and true God or make anything more important than God are living in rebellion to God.

In the second commandment, we find that no graven image is to be made. Why did God say that?

There are several reasons. 1.   A graven image is and influence to the heart.

That is a principle that advertisers use all the time. Those commercials and flyers and adds on tv or in the paper are all meant to draw your attention toward the object or toy or thing that they want you to buy. That is why your fast-food restaurants have big glittering adds on their signs in the stores; all you have to do see and point to get your order. If you will notice, the thing they want to sell the most or the thing that makes them the most money, will be first on their showcase. It works.

Lamentations 3:51  “Mine eye affecteth mine heart…”

2.      A graven image influences what you are to believe.

Romans 1:22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

We see it in Exodus 32:3  “And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4  And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.”

They made a golden calf and worshipped it claiming it was this god that brought them out of Egypt. We know that the Lord God of heaven brought them out of Egypt.

Exodus 18:9  And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

We know that Jesus is the saviour of the world, yet the graven image of Mary in some churches is depict something else. If you will notice, some of those images have Mary, the babe in one hand and an egg in the other hand. Why is that? Could it be that it is not Mary at all but another?

3.      It will change the way you behave.

When Israel made the golden calf and worshipped it, they changed their behaviour. They danced in nakedness and shame. False gods will change the way you behave.

Exodus 32:25  And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

Romans 1:21  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24  Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25  Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

What graven images do you have that changes the way you think and behave?

Jesus is the living and true God of heaven; he wants to save your soul. He is not some graven image on a cross depicting one in perpetual death. No, my friend, He is alive and is the savior of the world.

The choice is still yours,
