Morning Devotion: Lord’s Prayer

John 17:6  ¶I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. 7  Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. 8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. 9  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. 10  And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

Quite frequently we will see someone quoting Matthew six as the Lord’s prayer. There is nothing wrong with quoting scripture, I do it all the time. When it becomes a vain repetition then it goes against the will of God.  Matthew 6:7  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

The heathen is the person who is unsaved. It is not some person in the midst of the jungle somewhere. It is anyone who does not know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. It can be the well-dressed business man or the mom of a household.

That word “heathen” is the word “ethnos” in the Greek. It simply means ethnicity. Any person of any ethnicity without Jesus is considered heathen.

In today’s devotion we find that God gives to Jesus those who are His and He, Jesus, loses none, they are kept by God. Then we see Jesus (who is God) giving the words of God.

John 17: 8  For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Jesus gave us the words of God and everyone who received the word, that is believed the word, believes in Jesus. It teaches that Jesus came from God.

Acts 2:41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Romans 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

It is the precious bible that Jesus gave us. It is this book that gives us the wonderful truth. We, the believer, trust this book for all of our faith and practice, all of our faith and PRACTICE. Meaning everything we believe and DO comes from the wonderful bible.

Not only did these words come from Jesus, Jesus is the living word of God. WOW!

John knew this truth. 1 John 1:1  ¶That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, OF THE WORD OF LIFE; 2  (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

John saw Jesus, he handled Jesus, and knew Jesus came from God, just as Jesus prayed. Isn’t that wonderful?

The book of Revelation describes Jesus as the Word of God.

Revelation 19:11  ¶And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Not only did Jesus come from God, He is the living word of God and He gave us the word of God. Amazing.

Now, what do we do with that? We simply believe the word of God. We let God use the word of God to lead and guide us.

Psalm nineteen is a wonderful passage that points us to the great truth of God’s word and its working in our lives.

Psalms 19:7  The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8  The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

The choice is still yours,
