Morning Devotion: Luke – Christmas story.

Luke 1:5  There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

6  And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

7  And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8  And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

9  According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

10  And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

11  And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

12  And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13  But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14  And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15  For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

16  And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17  And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

What’s in a name?

Proverbs 22:1  A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

Ecclesiastes 7:1  A good name is better than precious ointment;

I am amazed at what people naming children today. Some of the names are just sounds and letters put together because it sounds cool or exciting or weird. A good name is a name recognized and of worth.

Here we have three names that God uses to fulfil His will and prophecy.

Zacharias – Remembered of Jehovah

Elizebeth – Oath of God

John – Jehovah is a gracious giver.

As we read our text, we will find God remembered Zacharias and performed His oath with him and Elizabeth.

God through the angel Gabriel visited Zacharias and revealed the oath and proclaimed the fulfilment through both their aging bodies. God was going to fulfil His promise for Israel and for you.

Isaiah 40:3  The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Matthew 3:1  In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, 2  And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3  For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

God will never fail to keep His word. His word will always come to fruition. Isaiah 55:11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

It is all a matter of timing, God’s timing. Galatians 4:4  But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5  To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

God has an oath for you; He has a promise for you and that is Christ. Jesus is God’s promise for salvation. God gave us His Son and through His Son He promised eternal life.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

God has also promised eternal death. Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 3:36  He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Choose life and live. Choose the oath of God.

The choice is still yours,
