Morning Devotion: Read Luke – Christmas Story

Luke 1:12  And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

13  But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

14  And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

15  For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

16  And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

17  And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

18  And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

19  And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

20  And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

21  And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

22  And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

23  And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24  And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25  Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

Zacharias is in the tabernacle at the altar of incense when a angel appears to him. The angel tells him that he and Elizabeth, his wife, will have a child. Both he and Elizabeth are past the age of conception. They were unable to have children and had not had children in there youth.

It was considered a reproach if a young woman did not have a child in her youth. Hannah had the same problem in 1 Samuel. She prayed and God gave Hannah as son named Samuel.

Here we find Zacharias and Elizabeth were both praying for a child. God answered their prayers. He answered their prayers in such a way that He sent and angel to tell them they were going to have a child. It was a miracle in the making.

The child’s name was to be John. John’s name means “Jehová is a gracious giver”

He was to be the forerunner of Jesus. He was to be the prophet of God.

Luke 1:67  ¶And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Luke 1:76  And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

77  To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

78  Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

79  To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

80  And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

My friend, John was let the folks know that Jesus is the light. Jesus is the saviour of the world; He is the light of the world. Anyone who is born-again knows this great truth because they have moved from darkness to light by the grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Isaiah 9:2  The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Isaiah 42:7  To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

The unbeliever is in darkness while the believer is in the light of life, Jesus. Oh, my friend, the devil wants you to be in darkness, he does not want you to know the truth.

2 Corinthians 4:4  In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

5  For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake.

6  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

You can live a great and happy life in this world and still not be in the light. When the life you live is over, darkness will be forever.

Psalms 49:17  For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. 18  Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. 19  He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

Light and life are in Jesus. John 8:12  Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The choice is still yours,
