Morning Devotion: Read Acts 1

Acts 1:15  And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) 16  Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. 17  For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. 18  Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

What does it mean to repent? How does one repent? What is real repentance?

The reason I ask this question is based on Judas and what he did.

Here in our text, we find that Judas received money and bought a field with the money he received for betraying Jesus.

Matthew 26:15  And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

His actions were prophesied in by Jeremiah and Zechariah.

Zechariah 11:12  And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.

13  And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.

We find that Judas realized what He did was wrong and by it he was condemned. Jesus said He would be condemned.

Matthew 26:24  The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. 25  Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

Judas betrayed Jesus anyway. Do you betray Jesus by your actions? You say and do one thing and do another not really living for Jesus.

Matthew 27:3  Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4  Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5  And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6  And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

7  And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8  Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

Indirectly Judas bought the filed of blood and then REPENTED HIMSELF and went out and hanged himself.

In our text, the bible tells us he fell headlong and burst asunder.

Acts 1:18  Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

No, there is no contradiction in scripture. You know what happened, Judas went repented himself and tried to hang himself on the edge of a cliff and the rope broke. Then he fell headlong and burst open on the rocks below.

Judas repented himself, he felt guilty, he felt condemned and he felt unworthy. Have you ever felt that way about something you have done or the way you are living? Repent unto God not self. That kind of feeling (repentance unto yourself) does nothing for your salvation. That kind of repentance is nothing more than feeling bad for what you did. That does not save you. You can feel guilty and the next minute forget what you did. Or, you can feel guilty and get despondent and depressed, maybe feel like you’re not worth it and no good. That leads to suicide. Judas did just that. He realized he did wrong to the great innocent wonderful Lord Jesus and could not handle it. He tried to hang himself and the rope broke and he fell to the rocks and his body broke open.

Real repentance is toward God not self. True repentance is turning from sin and turning toward God.

Jesus said in Luke 5:32  “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Mark 1:15  And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

There it is, repent, turn from sin and self and believe the gospel, the gospel being that Jesus died, was buried and rose from the dead to pay for your sins. Believe Jesus did that for you and be saved.

Or, you can repent unto yourself and be condemned just like Judas. Repentance unto yourself will always lead to destruction and death.

James 1:15  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

My friend, Jesus wants to save you and give you everlasting life. He wants to forgive you of your sin and give you assurance and joy and an unending relationship with him. Paul was a murderer of Christians, read what he said after he was saved. Read about his wonderful relationship with the Lord.

Romans 8:38  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The choice is yours,
