Morning Devotion: Read Colossians 4

Colossians 4:7  All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: 8  Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; 9  With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here. 1

Today we begin to look at the close of Paul’s letter the to Colossians. We see a wonderful man named Tychicus. He is described as a beloved brother, a faithful minister and a fellowservant of the Lord.

The word of God tells us that a good name is to be chosen for our children. I am amazed at the names people give to their children these days, that sound good but mean nothing. As you read through the scriptures you will find names and with those names you will find meaning. Take Tychicus for example, his name means fortunate. Tychicus was a fortunate man in that He was a Christian. His fortune will last forever in heaven.

What does your name mean? I am named Bruce, that means dweller of the thicket. I enjoy the outdoors. It matches my name. I like my name. There is one name I like better, it is Christian. I was made a Christian the moment Jesus saved my soul.

Here we have Tychicus who was a beloved brother with Paul. In other words, Tychicus was a brother in Christ. He was beloved or loved of Paul. There are several people whom I consider beloved brothers in my life, I have a real bother whom I call brother brother for he is born again and is also my brother in the flesh. I love him and pray for him daily.

Tychicus was a beloved brother; do you love your brother’s and sisters in the faith?

Tychicus was also faithful. What marvellous description of a man. He was a “faithful” minister in the faith. I find there are very few faithful ministers in the faith today. Most are temporary, helpful for a while then they are gone. Some are like the wind, they sweep through and leave a swath like a storm and then they are gone. Some are fervent for a while and then nothing. Tychicus was “faithful” he was steady and consistent for God. Are faithful to God, your pastor and your church or are you like the wind?

In my years of ministry I find there are several kinds of people when it comes to faithfulness. There are those who come sporadically and never accomplish much for God. There are those who come to church to hear the preaching and teaching of God’s word. Then there are those who come and are nothing but trouble and would not or could not do much for God. Then there are those who are the faithful, you can count on them because they love and have a desire to serve the Lord. Tychicus was of that crowd, he was faithful. He was so faithful, that God included Tychicus as an example in the scriptures.

Tychicus would travel with Paul and sometimes go in advance of Paul on his journeys.

Acts 20:4  And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.

Tychicus was the one who would go before Paul and would often take the letters that Paul wrote and read them and teach them to the churches and comfort hearts.

Colossians 4:7  All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord: 8  Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts;

He would go and tell the churches how Paul was doing while Paul was incarcerated. He was a comfort to the hearts of others.

Ephesians 6:21  But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things: 22  Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose, that ye might know our affairs, and that he might comfort your hearts.

Colossians 4:18  The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen. Written from Rome to Colossians by Tychicus and Onesimus.

Most people would have given up on Paul because he was in prison. Tychicus was one to those guys who was faithful to the end.

Every pastor and every church needs those who are faithful to God and the ministry, not for self glory but for God’s glory. Tychicus was a faithful one.

He was truly a fellowservant in Christ.

Are you a beloved, faithful, fellowservant of Christ?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
