Morning Devotion: Read Luke - A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus
Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
The Lord Jesus knew His time was come for to go to the cross of calvary. He set His face, meaning He was intent on doing the will of God.
A prophecy of the Lord gives us a deeper glimpse into the idea of setting ones face. Isaiah 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
When Jesus approached Samaria He sent some disciples ahead to find a place to eat and take respite. The Samaritans did not receive Him. They did not receive Him because Jesus had every intent on getting to Jerusalem.
So, at first glance we might be like the disciples and wonder why the Samaritans would be so rude and not except the Lord Jesus, after all, Jesus had done miracles and people were healed and lives were raised from the dead. Why would anyone reject the Lord?
The woman at the all of Samaria was converted and many believed on Him and He stayed with them for two days.
John 4:39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
John 4:40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
In Luke chapter seventeen Jesus did go to Samaria and ten lepers were healed.
At second glance we would see that Jesus was intent on getting to Jerusalem. The disciples thought to rebuke and destroy the Samaritan’s for their rudeness, but Jesus saw something different. He saw the souls of man and their need for salvation.
Luke 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
My friend, you always have the choice of wether you will receive the Lord Jesus or reject Him. Jesus is come to not to destroy you but to save you. You have the choice on whether you will believe or not.
Acts 28:24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
(As a side note; many of the new modern so called bible versions, leave out “For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.” And retain only the last part, “And they went to another village.” They, the bad guys, say the older manuscripts do not have this portion in them. They are referring to the Catholic book called the Vaticanus written in1470 AD and the Sinaticus written in 1840 AD claiming they were written in 330 AD. This lie was perpetrated to make you think they are the oldest and the best, when in fact, they are not.)
Be careful of what you believe to be the word of God. Your soul depends on it.
The choice is still yours,
Pastor Cook
