Morning Devotion: Read Colossians 4

Colossians 4:14  Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you. 15  Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house. 16  And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. 17  And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. 18  The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen. Written from Rome to Colossians by Tychicus and Onesimus.

As Paul closes his letter to the church at Colosse he mentions several men who also send greeting to the church. Luke the beloved physician was with Paul and gives his greeting as well.

What do we know about Luke? Luke was a gentile who wrote the book of Luke and the book of Acts. We know Luke was filled with the Spirit of God.

2Peter 1:21  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

By the way, God is not in the scripture writing business now. The bible is complete. God is fulfilling what He has written. Prophecy is being fulfilled even as we speak. Luke wrote about it. Read Luke 21:8 through 21:28.

In both books, the book of Luke and the book of Acts, Luke is writing to one called Theophilus. The name Theophilus means friend of God.

Luke 1:1  Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2  Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3  It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4  That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

Acts 1:1  The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2  Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

From Luke chapter one the first few versus we know Luke was an eye witness of the Lord Lord Jesus Christ. (Which is one of the qualifications of writing the cannon of scriptures.) We also know that much of what Luke had written was given to him from others who had been with Christ as well.

The book of Luke was written from a gentile perspective revealing Christs’ humanity. He specifically reveals how the Lord was born (being a physician) and all the glory of His birth. I know our family reads the Christmas story as recorded in Luke chapter 2 every Christmas morning.

As a physician we find a complete description of the prayer in the mount of olives. We find a complete description of Christ, resurrection and ascension into heaven.

As a physician we find the story of the good samaritan in Luke 10:29-37. We find him mentioning the medicinal practice of using wine and oil to heal a mans wound. The wine to cleanse, probably because of the alcoholic content. And the oil a preservative to cover wounds so no infection will happen. Don’t let the medicinal use of alcoholic wine persuade you into thinking drinking alcoholic beverages is ok, its not, no matter what your church says.

Luke was that faithful person who penned God’s word, he was Paul’s physician and stayed with Paul even until his death. Paul was beheaded with the sword just outside the city of Rome.

Luke was hung from an olive tree by an adulterous priest from Greece.

We do know that Luke never deviated from his walk with Christ even when he was with Paul in prison. He never stopped loving, serving and being faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ.

What about you, are you loving, serving and being faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ? To do so you must be born again, you must be saved.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
