Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Seventy Men Appointed to Serve

Luke 10:1  After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. 2  Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. 3  Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. 4  Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. 5  And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6  And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. 7  And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 8  And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: 9  And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.

Our Lord Jesus appoints seventy men who were to go in groups of two, that is thirty-five groups going forth to preach the Word of God.

Notice, the Lord says they are to go as lambs among wolves. They were to go into a world hostile toward the Lord and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Wolves, if you study them, are a very organized pack.

Wolves travel in packs and hunt in packs. As they travel they put the elderly in front of the pack, those are followed by a few of the young and strong. After that the core group, the family groups, follows and they are followed by a group of the young and strong. Finally, the leader of the pack brings up the rear.

Wolves are carnivorous and dangerous, they check out everything. Nothing goes unnoticed by the wolves. They love the sheep and the lambs because they are defenceless and easy prey, unlike the wild animals who are distinctly aware and always on guard.

Having said all that, I must remind you, the wolves are the harvest. They are the ones to whom God sends these men. They are the ones to whom we as believers must go to as well.

May I also remind you, there are wolves in sheep’s clothing as well.

Notice, there are those who will receive these men and offer respite and care in peace.

Luke 10:5  And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 6  And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

“If the son of peace be there,” peace will rest upon the whole scenario, the whole visit. The son of peace is none other than Jesus. Christians are a different breed of people. They are not wolves nor are they carnivorous or dangerous. They are, or they should be, peaceable.

The Christian is peaceable because they have a relationship with the prince of peace. Wolves do not.

Jesus said in John 14:27  “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

John 16:33  These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

As you have opportunity, be peaceable with other believers. Be peaceable with those that are sent by the Lord, the missionaries, the evangelist and the Christian you meet along the way; doing so not only brings peace but retains peace. That is a very good thing.

Galatians 6:9  And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10  As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Friend, do you have the peace of God, do you have peace with God; do you know that you are saved and on your way to heaven? Peace comes from the Son of Peace, Jesus.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
