Morning Devotion: Read Luke - The Parable of the Seed and the Sower
Luke 8:4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: 5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luke 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
Luke 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
The seed being the word of God is sown all over throughout the world. In our text we find some of the seeds feel among the thorns, (the weeds). It further tells us that the cares of life, (the responsibilities of life) and the riches of life and the pleasures of life choke the Word of God.
Notice the phrase: “when they have heard, go forth.” When they have heard the word of God they simply go about their business fulfilling their responsibilities and chasing riches and pleasures of life and giving little or no heed to the Word of God.
We all have responsibilities and we all need to work and labour to sustain ourselves, and we all enjoy the pleasures of life. But, when those things become more important than God they choke that which is intended to be a blessing not knowing that the Word of God is our sustenance.
Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Don’t worry about life’s responsibilities, do what you must do for it is right but, keep the Lord first.
As we enter into Super Bowl time in the U.S. we will see who seeks the pleasures of life choosing to watch the game rather than attend God’s church.
I remember one fella in our church who was a big football fan, he would attend church during the super bowl game but, he would record the game and run home afterwards to watch it. He had his priorities strait.
When overtime at work, to pay off the boat or camper or any another thing for pleasure sake, becomes more important than bible reading an prayer and church, the priorities are wrong.
When golf or sports on weekends with he kiddos takes one from church, the priorities are wrong. These are the “cares and riches and pleasures of this life,” which bring no fruit to perfection. Why? Because the Word of God is choked out.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Remember, Jesus is the living word of God, don’t let the pursuit of cares and riches and pleasures of life keep you from Jesus. He is the one you will meet before you enter into eternity.
The choice is still yours,
