Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs 1
Proverbs 1:1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: 6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
Proverbs is a wonderful book written by Solomon and some were works of Solomon copied by the men of Hezekiah king of Juda.
Some were written by others as well.
Proverbs 30:1 The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
Proverbs 31:1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. Some believe this was a pet name or a pleasant family name given as one would give their child a sweetened name like pumpkin or bunchkin and such. Maybe given by Bathsheba to Solomon.
Solomon was a prolific writer of wisdom: 1 Kings 4:30 And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about. 32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
The Book of Proverbs is one of five books classified as the poetry of Scripture. Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon all belong in poetry because they are written in Hebrew poetry.
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
Do you employ godly wisdom in your life, in your decision making process and in your deportment and manner of living?
Wisdom is - “The right use or exercise of knowledge;” “It differs somewhat from prudence, in this respect; prudence is the exercise of sound judgment in avoiding evils; wisdom is the exercise of sound judgment either in avoiding evils or attempting good. Prudence then is a species, of which wisdom is the genus.” Websters dictionary 1825
“In Scripture theology, wisdom is true religion; godliness; piety; the knowledge and fear of God, and sincere and uniform obedience to his commands. This is the wisdom which is from above. Psalms 90:12. Job 28:12.”
True wisdom is from God whereas the wisdom the world provides is against God.
1Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
Job 28:12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
Job 28:28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding
To employ wisdom is to fear God and trust in His salvation the Lord Jesus Christ. After all is said and done, the sinner will be cast into outer darkness, the saved will be in heaven and the earth will be destroyed and there will be a new earth and God will remain supreme. Read second Peter chapter two verses ten through thirteen and Revelation chapters twenty through twenty two.
The choice is still yours,
