Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 9:1  Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: 2  She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table. 3  She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city, 4  Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, 5  Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. 6  Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. 7  He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. 8  Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. 10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. 11  For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. 12  If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

The constant of wisdom is that she never relents and never quits and never backs down. Wisdom will ever be heralding truth and righteousness and verity.

As seen before, wisdom cries from the gates of the city, here wisdom cries from the chief places of the city. She is forever communicating, ever compelling and men and women to herself. Do you have godly wisdom?

Proverbs 9:3  She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city, 4  Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, 5  Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled. 6  Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

Did you know wisdom has a house? Yes, wisdom has a house, it is furnished and open and ready for feasting and dining. The menu in wisdom’s banqueting house is knowledge and understanding.

Wisdom’s house is set on seven pillars. Seven is the number of completion or maturity. Godly wisdom is complete, it’s from God. Godly wisdom if fully mature for it comes from God who knows all. There is great stability in the life of the one who chooses wisdom. Godly wisdom is very stable and secure.

Proverbs 9:1  Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars: 2  She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

Proverbs 9:5  Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

Wisdom has mingled her wine? What does that mean? Does wisdom allow drinking alcoholic beverages? Some people, even Christians think it’s okay. Some pastors preach it’s okay. What does wisdom say?

Proverbs 20:1  Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

If the bible says it is unwise to drink alcohol, then, the mingled wine in our text must be grape juice. Red wine, white wine, deep dark purple wine and wine of all flavours are furnished for the pure table. It’s grape juice!

Now, you have just received a bit of a rebuke; how you react to that wisdom reveals who you are.

Do you try to shame the one who gives wisdom about alcohol and other godly wisdom? (Do you justify yourself saying that wisdom is foolish everyone does it even christians? Even Jesus made wine.) Do you give a blot to those who teach wisdom and do you hate them? Or, do  you love those who genuinely give good godly wisdom?

Proverbs 9:6  Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. 7  He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot. 8  Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

James 3:13  Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

The wisest choice anyone can make is to realize their sin and trust in the efficacious work and shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ to save them from their sin and the penalty thereof. Be wise.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
