Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 12:25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
Words? words given in the right way at the right time can be a blessing. A good word is precious to the ears of the hearer especially when the heart is heavy to burdened.
We are reminded of Job and his trials and his friends who, in the time of heaviness, brought Job accusations and blame rather than a good word. They gave those words to Job because they did not understand God’s will.
Job understood the principle of right words when he said. “How forcible are right words! but what doth your arguing reprove?” (Job 6:25)
Job would rather speak with God than to listen to forgers of lies and physicians of no value. (And these guys were supposed to be his friends.)
Job 13:3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. 4 But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
They may have been like Proverbs 12:18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
Good words are from the tongue of the wise, but there are piercing words that sting and hurt.
When the heart is heavy, burdened or hurting that is the time to give a good word.
Proverbs 8:8 All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
Remember, the words you speak, once given, cannot return, they are out there, forever to be remembered. It’s like the internet today, once you put something out there, it's very difficult to erase.
Let God evaluate your words.
Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
Psalm 49:3 My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
We are reminded of the prophet Samuel, who, even as a child, never let his words fall to the ground. He never let his words be of no value. He was careful with the things he said.
1Samuel 3:19 And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
We are all guilty of speaking words that pierce; let your words be good especially to those who are of heavy hearts.
Proverbs 12:25 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
Jesus always spoke the right words.
The choice is still yours,
