Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 13:2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Whenever I read theses verses I am reminded of Ephesians chapter five.
Ephesians 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. 3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Children of light and children of darkness have different types of speech. The sad thing is that children of light (Christians) often times have resorted to the language of the children of darkness. Especially in this modern day of which we live.
Rather than using clear and direct speech, they use risqué speech and innuendoes or double meanings to promote filth while thinking it’s funny.
God encourages the believer to us plainness of speech rather than tricky, sneaky words that promote snickering and muted laughter. That should never be the words of the Christian.
Matthew 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
James 5:12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
Our text gives us warning to refrain from such speech.
Proverbs 13:2 A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. 3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.
Have you ever been around that person who is always joking: I tend to stay away from that type of person. Eventually their jokes go from light hearted to filth and sex and, in some cases, violence. They always seem to digress. That is the nature of such talk. Read Ephesians five again.
Our Lord Jesus Christ never made jokes and never digressed into filthy talk. Everything He said was right and righteous.
Being a Christian means being Christlike. Being Christlike will be evident in your speech and actions.
Are you a born-again Christian or are you a religious christian?
The choice is still your,
