Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs - Watch Your Mouth
Proverbs 10:10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall. 11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. 12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. 13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding. 14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.
Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. 20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. 21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.
Proverbs 10:31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out. 32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.
Stop and listen. Listen to people and what they say: mot only listen to what is said but listen with an eye for how things are said. You will learn multitudes about that person or peoples.
The person who winks with the eye usually has something behind the wink, a secret or a motive not yet voiced or an agenda not yet manifested often accompanies the wink.
Then we see the mouth of the wicked is covered with violence. This phrase is mentioned twice in this text. Proverbs 10:6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.
A mouth covered in violence is a mouth that consistently speaks violence. When that mouth is opened, only violence comes out, you can’t see any good or righteousness, just a fog of violence spewing out.
When one looks at the news and sees the demonstrations and riots and the questions from reporters and responses from demonstrators one can easily see the violence that covers the mouth.
What you say and how you say it reveals what is seated deep within your heart and soul.
Matthew 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: 20a These are the things which defile a man:
Isaiah 59:12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them; 13 In transgressing and lying against the LORD, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. 14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. 15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment. (It displeases the Lord when mankind does not judge himself.)
Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: (Meaning sin is always present.)
The righteous, on the other hand, have a different language. Proverbs 10:11a The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life:
Proverbs 10:20a The tongue of the just is as choice silver:
Proverbs 10:21a The lips of the righteous feed many:
Proverbs 10:31a The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom:
Proverbs 10:32a The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable:
David prayed in Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”
Salvation is the only thing that can change the heart thereby changing the tongue.
Psalm 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
The choice is still yours,
