Morning Devotion: Read Exodus

Exodus 21:1  Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. 2  If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 3  If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4  If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. 5  And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: 6  Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever. 7  And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. 8  If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. 9  And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 10  If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 11  And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.

Exodus 21:16  And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

This section covers slavery. Remember, Israel had come out of slavery with the Egyptians. The culture was different back then. Slavery was ingrained in people; some sold themselves to slavery. Some sold their daughters to slavery. Much of this type of thing still happens today in other regions of the world. In fact some countries have slavery built into their laws.

However, the Americas especially in the North Americas this is typically frowned upon.

There is voluntary slavery and forced slavery.

Do you realize that the New Testament uses the idea of being a servant, a voluntary slave as an example of graciously serving the Lord. So, we see the word servant is used in place of being a slave.

Romans 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17  But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18  Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:22  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

The word servant in the greek is doulos - a slave (literally or figuratively, involuntarily or voluntarily; frequently therefore in a qualified sense of subjection or subserviency): - bond (-man), servant.

Here is the truth, Jesus purchased your salvation on calvary’s cross. He paid for your sin and redeemed you from the slave block of sin and the devil from which you were previously a slave.

1Peter 1:18  Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21  Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

You can chose whose servant or slave you wish to be.

Romans 6:16  Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

When a person places their faith, their trust in Christ, Jesus saves them, redeems them from the slave block of sin and gives them new life.

Romans 6:22  But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

I am one of those slaves, servants who voluntarily chose to serve my saviour Jesus Christ.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
