Morning Devotion: Ten Commandments
Exodus 20:1 ¶And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Israel had been redeemed out of Egypt and were on their way to the Promise land. We must remember there were a multitude of people, over 600,000 men not including women and children. That is a lot of people walking through the wilderness without something to guide them. They had the Lord and they had Moses, they needed God’s law.
We all need law, some type of law for without law there is chaos. Without law, man will do that which his heart desires. That is not a bad thing if the heart desires that which is good. If the heart is wicked the desires will be wicked. Let me assure you, the heart of man is wicked. Just look around you.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
I was going door to door handing out tracts and came across a door with a placard that read, “There is no hatred here.” As I looked, I saw symbols all around the door, LBGTQ, Islam, Rham, New age, Buddha, Satan, and all sorts. The idea was given that everything is accepted in that house. It was clear that all gods were accepted there except the true God, Jesus. What that house did not know was that Satan was the perpetrator of all the ideologies depicted on that door. They were deceived. Satan portrays himself as a good god. He wants to get rid of God and make himself god over all.
Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Jesus was speaking about Satan and described him as such: John 8:44… “He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
The first thing God did with Israel when they left the false gods of Egypt was to give them truth. The gods of Egypt were destruction, while the true God of heaven saves them. That is why God gave them the ten commandments.
The first commandment related directly to the issue of false gods. Exodus 20:1 ¶And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
There are a lot of gods that people follow today. The god of money, the god of assets like cars and homes and boats and campers and stuff; the god of sports and entertainment; the god of sex and lust, the god of booze and drugs and the list goes on and on. How many folks have forsaken the true God of heaven for these things? And, what about the god of self?
Let’s read about where the god of self came from. Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Romans 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Romans 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
You see, false gods will draw you away from the true loving, kind and gracious God of heaven and all eternity. As you read your bible, you will see, every time Israel embraced a false god, it led to trouble and anguish and pain and even death. God gave the first commandment to protect Israel from False god’s
With that in mind, we know that Jesus is God manifest in the flesh and wants to give you eternal life. He wants to redeem you from the false gods of this world and save your soul. Would you let him?
The choice is still yours,
