Morning Devotion: Read Luke - The Report of the Seventy

Luke 10:17  And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 18  And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20  Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

The seventy men who were ordained and sent out by the Lord Jesus Christ, return giving a great report to the Lord. They indeed had power over the fallen devil and his fallen angels.

The devil and his fallen angels, called demons, were cast out of heaven in verse 18 of our text. We find this falling in Revelation 9 and 12.

Revelation 9:1  And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

Sometimes the angels are referred to as stars. In Revelation 12 we see the devil drew a third part of the angels with him when he rebelled against God.

Revelation 12:4a  And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth:

Revelation 12:7  And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8  And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9  And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Isn’t it wonderful that the Lord gave these men power to tread on the serpents and the devil without hurt?

Luke 10:19  Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notice, their power came from Jesus, who is God.

They and all their works were done in the name of the Lord Jesus to authenticate the Word of God and that the world would know that Jesus Christ is Lord and be saved.

John 20:31  But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

What about us today, what kind of power do we have?

We have the power to draw near to God and resist the devil. Our power is the Lord Jesus Christ.

James 4:6  But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8  Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9  Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10  Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

While the devil may be alive and well on this sod we call earth, we have something even more powerful, we have Jesus.

Matthew 28:18  And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

That is why we draw near to Him. Just as a child runs to daddy for protection against the bad guys, so we run to God.

Today, beloved of the Lord, endeavour to draw nigh to God. Start with prayer and then read God’s love letter written to you, His Word.

Both prayer and God’s word will be a great blessing in helping to to draw near to the Lord and resist the devil.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
