Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Two Ladies, Two Concerns
Luke 10:38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
In life, we all must make choices. We all must choose what is best. We all must prioritize utilizing wisdom in the process.
How many times are we encumbered with the care of this world to the point of neglecting the one and great principle of sitting at the Lord’s feet. Learning from the Lord the great principles of God’s will and word. These are the needful things that bring peace in the heart.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28-30 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Being anxious and worrying about life’s cares can often rob you of the necessary things that mean so much. While we all have to cook and clean and wash clothes and keep up cars and homes and work and such things in life, we must take the time to sit at Jesus’ feet. That is were anxieties flee and our relationship with God and our Lord Jesus Christ is strengthened. Sitting at the feet of Jesus is where we find the needful things.
Matthew 6:25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Matthew 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Do you want peace? Do you want anxieties to flee? Do you want that which is needful?
Choose Jesus; take time to sit at His feet and learn. Be like Mary, find the needful thing.
How do we sit at the feet of Jesus today in 2025? My friend, sitting at the feet of Jesus begins by recognizing He is the source of that which is needful. He is the only one who can save the soul giving peace with God and then having the peace of God.
As a believer, sit at the Lord’s feet, start with prayer. Take time to seek God’s face in prayer.
Read God’s word; take time to see the needful things. (Do you realize, every time you read God’s word, the author is there with you helping you to understand. The author is the Holy Spirit.)
Why do so many people struggle and worry and encumber themselves when they can have that which is needful?
The choice is still yours,
Pastor Cook
