Morning Devotion:  Read Luke - The Lord's Prayer

Luke 11:1  And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2  And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3  Give us day by day our daily bread. 4  And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

We find what is commonly called the Lord’s prayer in Matthew chapter six as well.

Matthew 6:7  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8  Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10  Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11  Give us this day our daily bread. 12  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14  For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15  But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Notice in our text, the disciples asked the Lord to teach them to pray. The Lord answers with an example. Notice the Lord did not say “Repeat after me.” When you repeat you lose the reality and the passion of prayer because it becomes rote, it becomes a vain repetition.

When I was in bible college we used to have to memorize scripture and were given test on that which we memorized. I would learn those scriptures so well that I could repeat them backwards. I would go into class repeating the scriptures backward and the other students would cry, “Stop” you are messing up my memory.

The point is this; memorizing scripture is good, we should all do so. However, we should never memorize prayer. Memorized prayer becomes rote and loses its personal relationship with the Lord.

Matthew 6:7  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Remember, it was the Lord’s disciples that came to Him, not the lost, not the unsaved. The question was from those that believed and followed the Lord. As time would have it, it was from those who followed the Lord even unto death.

The Lord’s prayer was instruction to those who were called and saved by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Psalms 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

However, there is one prayer the lord will always hear, that is the prayer of salvation. The prayer God is interested in is the prayer of contrition and humility trusting Jesus to save.

Psalm 34:18  The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

As a believer in Christ Jesus, we have the privilege to enter into prayer with the Lord. We can boldly enter the throne of grace.

Hebrews 4:16  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

There are a whole lot of people trying to enter that throne of grace who have right to it.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
