Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Visit

Luke 8:19  Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. 20  And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. 21  And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

The family comes to visit. Yes, Jesus had brothers and sisters. Matthew 13:55  Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? 56  And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

So, we now know that the idea of perpetual virginity on the part of Mary is false. She neither came from immaculate conception nor did she maintain such; she was a normal woman with normal children. Yes, Jesus had brothers and sisters just like many of us.

Also, you will notice that Jesus had a brother named Judas. Jesus’ brother Judas was not the Judas that betrayed Him. The Judas that be betrayed Jesus was the son of Simon the pharisee.

John 6:71  He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

You have lots off Simon’s in the bible as well, you have Simon the leper, Simon the Pharisee, Simon Peter, Simon who carried the cross for Jesus, etc.

The point is this, there are many who may have the same name but, not everyone is a part of the family.

In our text we see Jesus’ Mother (who we know is Mary) and His brother’s visiting Him. But, because of the crowd, for Jesus was widely know because of His healings, there was no room for them to get to Jesus to visit with Him.

Luke 8:19  Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.

Then someone came to Jesus and told Him that His mother and brothers were standing by to desiring to see Him.

Luke 8:20  And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.

Jesus then makes an incredible statement.

Luke 8:21  And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Those who hear the word of God and do it are the family of God. Do you hear the word of God and do you do the word of God?

The Word of God tells us to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be a part of the Family.

Acts 16:31  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

John 1:12  But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Believing is step one, step two is doing. The doing is the proof of your relationship.

Mark 3:35  For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

There is only one of two families you can be in, the family of God or the family of the devil. John 8:44.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Coo
