Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Jesus Heals Jairus's Daughter
Luke 8:40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. 41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: 42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
Luke 8:49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. 50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. 51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. 53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. 55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. 56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
This account of healing is also written on the gospel of Mark. Jairus was an important man in the religious world. He was a ruler of the synagogue. Just as Nicodemus was a ruler of the Jews.
Jairus had only one daughter and she lay dying. In desperation he was driven to the only one who could heal his dear child, Jesus.
In times of desperation and in times that seem out of our control, no matter what people believe about Jesus, they often break out of that phi sod and go the one who heals.
In my years of ministry I have had many come to me asking for prayer for the sick, for those with infirmities and some on the verge of death. While it is natural for the believer to do so, I have had atheist, and agnostics and the unsaved and those against Christ, drop their guard and seek prayer for their loved ones. I ask myself, why?
It is because deep down in their hearts, just as Jairus, they know the truth about Jesus. They know that God heals.
While they were on their way to help, news came that Jairus’s daughter had died. No doubt there was great anguish and hurt at the news. However, Jesus gives great comfort to Jairus.
Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.
“Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole.”
Mark 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
There is it, “be not afraid, only believe.”
My friend, Jesus can not only heal those physically sick, he can heal the soul.
John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. (Quicken means to make alive.)
Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Would you let Jesus quicken your soul, make your soul alive in Christ Jesus?
No matter what happens physically, once you have been quickened by the Lord Jesus, eternal life is yours forever.
The choice is still yours,
