Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Who Is the Greatest?
Luke 9:46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. 47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, 48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
Who is greatest in the eyes of the Lord? It is the Lord to whom we as believers ascribe to and desire please. The scriptures tell us: βfor he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.β
While the world view gives us the idea that greatness is to have money and ethos, and prowess and glamour and style, God tells us that the greatest among us are the servants.
I am reminded of John chapter 13.
John 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; 3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.
John 13:12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? 13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. 16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. 17 If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
Our greatest example is Jesus. Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Most of the world has an entitlement attitude where they believe everything is about them and instant gratification is of utmost importance. Jesus displayed something totally different.
When you come to the point where Jesus comes first and Others second and You last, then you will know the true meaning of joy.
Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
Jesus is our greatest example, he washed the feet of others, He gave His life on the cross for others, He rose from the dead and is alive today and will one day return for others.
Where are you in that mix? Do you think everything is about you and you deserve this or that, or do you see yourself as a servant of the Lord Jesus?
To be the greatest is to be the servant for the Lord.
The choice is still yours,
Pastor Cook
