Morning Devotion: Read Luke - The Parable of the Seed and the Sower

Luke 8:4  And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: 5  A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 6  And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 7  And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8  And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Parable Explained

Luke 8:11  Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12  Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13  They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14  And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15  But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

The first thing we must understand about this parable is that the seed is the Word of God, the Sower is the Lord Himself for He is the Living word of God.

The sower sows or plants the seed. The seed, the Word of God is planted throughout, all over and everywhere. As said in verse 12, the seed is sown in the way side. That is, the seed is sown in the way or place where people live and operate.

The seed is sown in the soil which in this parable is the heart of man. The Word of God is sown in the heart.

The heart is the seat of the emotion and the core of each person spiritually. It is the innermost sanctum of the individual. It is the place where love and hate are found. It is the place of decision. It is the place where God’s word is sown.

When the heart of the individual hears the Word of God, what does he or she do with the Word of God?

Verse 12  “Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.”

How does the devil do that? How does he take the Word of God away from the heart? He does so by the philosophies, by social improprieties, by rudiments, and by deceit.

Example: “Love,” the world says that we should “love” everyone, be tolerant of everyone, allow everything, allow sin, don’t judge and be happy.

The seed, the Word of God, tells us that sin is unacceptable and it condemns. While God does love us, for God so loved the world, He does not accept sin.

However, God loved us enough to die on Calvary’s cross to pay for sin.

Romans 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Now, those who believe that God, in “love” should accept everyone and everything no matter what will balk at the truth that God hates sin, and accuse God of being intolerant, and the devil will have stolen the seed from the heart and that person will remain lost.

Every time the seed, the Word of God, is given to the heart, the person hearing it must make a decision to receive or reject. Will you allow the philosophies, and social improprieties, the rudiments of this world and deceit rob you of the truth?

John 8:32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
