Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 20:20  Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

This proverb goes along with Proverbs 19:26  He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

God teaches us that honour and respect should be given to our parents. In fact the Lord gives a promise for doing so.

Exodus 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Ephesians 6:1  Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2  Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3  That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

There is also a curse attached to this proverb as well. “His lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.”

A lamp is used for direction and for guidance. You use a lamp to find your way in the dark; when that lamp is removed you have obscure darkness. Nobody like to meander around in the dark groping for direction and feeling for stability. Surely such a predicament will lead to crashing into things and stubbing toes and ultimately falling.

God’s word is that lamp given from the Father of lights with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning.

Psalm 119:105  NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Proverbs 6:23  For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

The light also reproves and exposes dirt and grime and sin.

Ephesians 5:13  But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

In the context of this Proverb we find the father and the mother are teaching and giving wisdom through instruction.

Proverbs 1:8  My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

To curse father or mother is to utter a wish of evil against one; to imprecate evil upon; to call for mischief or injury to fall upon; to execrate. It means to injure; to subject to evil; to vex, harass or torment with great calamities. (Websters Dictionary 1828)

When you curse your parents you are literally asking evil to come upon them, that brings upon you obscure darkness.

Proverbs 20:20  Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

Christian, we have our heavenly Father; He has left us a wonderful book full of instruction and full of guidance it is called the bible. The bible is composed of 66 books both the Old Testament and the New Testament. It covers every aspect of life and death and all the eternal things that we need to know about. It was written by God using men of God being filled with the Spirit of God to pen His words.

Let me encourage you to embrace it, read it, love it and live it. But, by all means, never, ever, curse what God the Father has given you, it will leave you in obscure darkness.

God’s word tells us of the one true light that has come into the world to save sinners.

John 8:12  Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
