Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 27:13 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.
This proverb is also stated in chapter 20:16 “Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.”
If we may, we will also go to proverbs Chapter 6.
Proverbs 6:1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, 2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. 3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. 4 Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. 5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
He who unwisely takes on debt with a stranger or for a strange woman takes on debt for frivolous things that only drain sustenance and resources.
Debt, can be relieved by paying it off as early as possible or in some drastic change. In the case of national debt it can only be relieved through a major disaster or conflict with the nations where debt is obtained. This proverb applies to both the personal and the national or global level.
However, on a personal level; have you ever gotten yourself into debt you wished you never entered? I personally know people who have gotten into debt with timeshares and to this day regret doing so because they are so difficult to opt out. With this type of debt, their children often have to take responsibilities when the debtor, their parents, pass away. How silly to take on such a debt with a stranger.
Proverbs 11:15 He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.
You become a servant to those of whom you owe. Proverb 22:7 The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
The lender has the power to take back what he has lent if payment is not satisfied. It is called repossession.
Proverbs 22:26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. 27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?
Romans 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
There is one debt we all owe, the is the debt of sin. The only way out of this debt is Jesus.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The sin debt can only be satisfied with one of two ways.
If one pays the sin debt on their own, it will be paid with eternal separation from God in a place called hell and then the lake of fire. Why? Because there is none righteous enough to satisfy God’s payment plan for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
If one places their faith and trust in Jesus and His efficacious work and shed blood on Calvary’s cross their sin debt is paid and they are free in Christ.
Hebrews 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
John 8:36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
