Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs - A Father's Wise Instruction

Proverbs 4:1  Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. 2  For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. 3  For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. 4  He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. 5  Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 6  Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. 7  Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. 8  Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. 9  She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

This proverb, an instruction from a father, is filled with one great principle, “good doctrine.”

What is doctrine? Doctrine is another word for teaching.

If there is good doctrine there must also be bad doctrine or it would simply be called doctrine. Not all doctrine or teaching is good. So, where is the line of demarcation? Where is the line in the sand that divides the good from the bad? How do we know the difference?

The answer is found in the text - “forsake ye not my law.” There is one law and one law giver, God. It is the Word of God; that my friend is the line in the sand.

Believe in God and His law or not.

Acts 28:24  And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

For those who believe, the law of God is wonderful.

Psalm 19:7  The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8  The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11  Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

The law of God is perfect, it is sure, it is simple. The law of God rejoices the heart and is pure. The law of God clean, and righteous, and true. All those who embrace the law embrace good doctrine and that is the honourable thing. That is the ornament of grace and crown of glory that adorns the believer.

Proverbs 4:8  Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. 9  She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

Proverbs 1:9  For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

Good doctrine leads to good living bad doctrine leads to bad living.

2Timothy 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Do you read the bible? That is where good doctrine is found.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
