Morning Devotion:  Read Proverbs - Warning Against Adultery

Proverbs 5:1  My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: 2  That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. 3  For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: 4  But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. 5  Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. 6  Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. 7  Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. 8  Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: 9  Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: 10  Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger; 11  And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, 12  And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; 13  And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! 14  I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

The wisdom of the father continues as the son is instructed in the way of purity.

Purity is a wonderful word, it carries the idea of something beautiful and clean and without flaws or corruption. While most of the world looks at purity and being pure, in heart and mind, as something archaic or out of touch with society, the pure see such things as right and good.

Titus 1:15  Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

In our text we find the father advising the son to stay away from the subtle seduction that leads to impurity and ultimately destruction and ruin of the family and personal wealth.

Wisdom, says learn to recognize such temptation and remove yourself from it. Don’t let it take you by surprise.

Proverbs 5:7  Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. 8  Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

Down through the years of ministry, I have seen many families destroyed because one spouse yields to temptation. The whole situation leads to divorce and alimony and financial support, lawyer fees, court cost and problems with visitation rights and a host of other issues such as trust and reliance.

Wisdom says think about it, think of what this kind of deviation cost.

Proverbs 5:9  Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: 10  Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger; 11  And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

Often times it is the children who suffer the most in these situations. They lose the stability that a unified family brings to the table.

Finally, it comes down to the same situation as we saw in proverbs one where the person ends up saying, what was I thinking? Why did I wonder from that which was pure and right? Why didn’t I listen to those who instructed me in the right way?

Proverbs 5:12  And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; 13  And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! 14  I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

Again, this kind of instruction toward comes from the wonderful word of God.

Psalm 119:9  BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. 10  With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. 11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

This proverb is filled with practical and logical teaching through wisdom. Are you practical and logical enough to listen and follow?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
