Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs - Be Content

Proverbs 5:15  Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. 16  Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. 17  Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. 18  Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. 19  Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. 20  And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? 21  For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. 22  His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. 23  He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

As the father continues to instruct his son on godly wisdom there comes an admonishment as well. Wisdom will guide you in the right way and the pure path, but there will always be temptations along the way.

Here in our text the father is specifically speaking about marriage and its sacredness. From verse two and throughout the son is instructed to use wisdom in discerning the strange women who seduces into infidelity. (By the way, this text may be speaking to the son, but it apples to the daughter as well for she can also be seduced.)

In verses twelve and thirteen there is a lamentation for the one who actually fell  and suffered the cost of seduction and ultimately asks: “How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!”

All through this last portion of proverbs chapter five the prevailing idea is contentment. Be content with what God has given you. Men, be content with your wife whom you have chosen. Women, be content with the husband you have vowed to.

The apostle Paul said it quite well in Philippians. Philippians 4:11  Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Hebrews 13:5  Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

God is watching. Proverbs 5:21  For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.

Proverbs 15:3  The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

Children very seldom get in trouble when parents are watching for they can see them watching. It is when the child is out of sight that things begin to take a different turn for they think no one can see them.

Because men cannot see God watching them they think God is not watching them. The idea never comes to mind.

I am reminded of a story about a man sealing corn from a corn field. He would pick and ear and look this way ad that and then stuff it into one pocket. He would puck another ear and do the same. He looked every which way as he was stuffing corn into his pockets. Then his son, who was with him, tugged on his pant leg and said “Dad, you forgot to look up.”

Isaiah 29:15  Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Wisdom says “look up” seek the counsel of the Lord in everything you do.

2 Corinthians 5:9  Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

My friend, the only way we can be pleasing in the sight of God is to first know God and His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
