Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs -

Proverbs 6:1  My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, 2  Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. 3  Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. 4  Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. 5  Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

The book of proverbs is filled with wisdom for all experiences of life. In Fact the bible, God’s word, is so comprehensive it covers every aspect you could ever go through in life. It covers life, and death and everything that takes place in between.

In our text God gives some advice about surety. What is surety? Surety carries several meanings. Surety means safety, it means to make one sure or to give stability as a sure foundation. Surety means to ratify or confirm something to make sure your intent or dealings. It means to make stable against loss or damage.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is our surety. Hebrews 7:22  By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. When one turns from self and sin and trusts In Jesus, you can be sure God will save you.

In Proverbs 6 we find surety when one gives their word and when one enters into business dealings with others whether it be for loans or co-signing or simply giving their word to bind themselves to something or someone.

When one gives their word it should be enough to bind that person. However, we often find men breaking their word.

Psalm 15 tells us that the believer gives his word and does not change even if it hurts or cost him.

Psalm 15:1  A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

Psalm 15:4b  He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

The admonition in our text is; if you have given your word or signed in business or become a co-signer, keep your word. Go to that person and pay the debt, deliver thyself. Go to the person quickly and take care of the situation. Go to that person seek forgiveness of your word or your debt. If they say no, you must stick to your word or your contract, that is surety. If they say yes and release you that is a good thing.

Let’s be frank here this morning. Before you enter into such things be careful of whom you are dealing with. Don’t make deals or shake hands with someone that does not have the same beliefs as you. Don’t just willy nilly take on responsibility you cannot handle or keep.

Proverbs 11:15  He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.

Proverbs 17:18  A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

My friend, there is one who is sure and of great surety, that is Christ Jesus. He has given is his word and will keep it forever.

Jesus said in Luke 21:33  “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”

Isaiah 55:11  So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

God will keep His word, you can be sure of that.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
