Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs - Wisdom Calls

Proverbs 1:20  Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: 21  She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, 22  How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? 23  Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24  Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25  But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27  When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29  For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30  They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32  For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. 33  But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Wisdom calls from every direction, the one who fears the Lord will find it (Read verse 7). The simple will let wisdom pass by thinking they know it all. The wise will grasp wisdom believing they still need to learn.

The simple will let wisdom slide by and when wisdom is brought up or taught or used as facts or in admonishment they will scorn and even hate truth. God asks the question, “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity?”

I can remember at least five times in my life when the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ was given to me in hope of salvation. Each time I refused the truth and laughed and scorned and said I don’t need Jesus. However, on one special day I was given the gospel and an invitation to church and I went. I went only because the person who invited me was genuinely concerned and dearly wanted me to be saved. That glorious day, at church, Jesus saved my soul. It was that day the simplicity was cast out and the fear of the Lord was embraced. It was on that day that wisdom became paramount via the word of God.

Proverbs 1:23  Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24  Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

Would you listen when wisdom reproves you? Would you listen when the spirit draws you? Would you take the hand of wisdom when it is held out to you? Or, will you say, I will not regard wisdoms counsel nor do I need the reproof. In other words, don’t tell me what to do! I will do things my own way.

Have you ever done something one way knowing you should have done it the other way and when you were finished you said, “What was I thinking, why didn’t I do it the right way?” That is when wisdom laughs and mocks you.

Proverbs 1:26  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27  When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

When a person rejects Christ Jesus and all that comes with salvation; (which is eternal life, heaven, God’s blessing and guidance here on earth.) when one steps into eternity without Him, that is when wisdom laughs and mocks. That is when it will be too late and wisdom will not be found.

At that time one will say; “What was I thinking, why didn’t I make the right choice back then?” That is the time when that person will get exactly what they wanted with great regret.

Proverbs 1:31  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32  For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

My friend, choose wisdom: when all is said and done and earthly life is finished, wisdom will be a blessing. Remember, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs 1:33  But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
