Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. 3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
The tongue is mentioned 19 times in the book of proverbs. The wise person uses their tongue, their words, with right knowledge. The wise person uses their tongue, their words, in a wholesome way, in a way which brings life.
All the while we find that the eyes of the Lord watch both those with the evil and foolish tongue and those who use their words rightly. What we must keep in mind is God not only watches He is keeping record.
Matthew 12:37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Verse 4 speaks of the person who with their tongue or the words they say reveal a “breach” in the spirit. That word means fracture, ruin, affliction, breach, breaking, broken [footed or hand], bruise, crashing, destruction, hurt and vexation or worry in the spirit.
The tongue and what it says reveals the true spiritual nature of an individual whether their spirit is broken or not.
Proverbs 15:2 The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.
To use knowledge rightly means one must have possession of knowledge. We are not talking about knowledge in planting a garden or fixing an engine or flying a plane, or knowledge of the atmosphere or depths of the ocean, or even artificial intelligence; we are talking about the knowledge of God and of Christ.
The wise use the wonderful knowledge of God to bring life and well being while the foolish pour out foolish talking, meaningless speech.
The one person who always used wise, right words that brought life was Jesus. In fact He left His words with us, it is called the bible.
Matthew 13:54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
Mark 6:2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?
Jesus said in John John 17:8 “For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
John 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Finally, we see that using soft words turns away wrath were previous words stir up anger.
Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
Have you ever been snippy or curt or impolite or used innuendoes and subtle jabs to belittle or accuse or hurt and blame another person. Those words are grievous words? Whereas the soft, wise, wholesome tongue is a tree of life.
One brings wrath, foolishness, perverseness and breach while the other brings life, peace and wholesomeness.
What kind of words do you posses?
Let the Lord guide your use of words. 2Corinthians 5:14a For the love of Christ constraineth us;
The choice is still yours,
