Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 15:5  A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Proverbs 15:10  Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.

Proverbs15:12  A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.

Proverbs 15:31  The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. 32  He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Proverbs 15 is loaded with the word reproof and the concept of reproving. The whole concept of reproof is goes against the grain of pride for it makes open ones sin, vulnerabilities and inadequacies.

Quite frankly, nobody likes to be told they are wrong or in need of help.  As we read in verse 10, reproof or correction is grievous because it forces one to take a good look at self. Most would simply say, “I don’t want to hear it!” “Tell me good things about myself, not the bad.”

They want smooth speech and they want God out of the way.

Isaiah 30:9  That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: 10  Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: 11  Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.

When we go back to proverbs 1 we find that those who refuse reproof are left to their own ways.

Proverbs 1:23  Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. 24  Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25  But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26  I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27  When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28  Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29  For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30  They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32  For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. 33  But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

God will let you live your life the way you want and as one person said, “it will catch up to you.”

Jeremiah 2:19  Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

To hearken to God’s reproof is to dwell safely and be quiet from fear of evil. To hearken to God’s reproof is to accept what He says being obedient to Him, regardless the consequences.

2Timothy 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Proverbs 15:31  The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. 32  He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

The choice is still yours,
