Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverb 12:4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
VIR'TUOUS, adjective
1. Morally good; acting in conformity to the moral law; practicing the moral duties, and abstaining from vice; as a virtuous man.
2. Being in conformity to the moral or divine law; as a virtuous action; a virtuous life.
The mere performance of virtuous actions does not denominate an agent virtuous
3. Chaste; applied to women.
4. Efficacious by inherent qualities; as virtuous herbs; virtuous drugs. [Not in use.] (Websters Dictionary 1828)
However, the definition of word “virtuous” in our text goes further than morality and being chaste it implies great strength and valour, a woman of substance and activity, a woman of worth for she is the crown to her husband.
Compare the woman in verse 12 to the woman in verse 22 of chapter 11.
Proverb 11:22 As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.
Picture if you will a the swine rutting around in the slop and filth and mud and having a jewel fixed to its snout. The picture is repulsive to say the least.
Now, picture a fair young lady in the same venue.
In our world today the latter is promoted as being virtuous while the former is pictured as prude and dull and lacking in fun. But in the eyes of God and encircled in wisdom the former woman is virtuous. She is the crown of her husband.
God encourages us be moderate and be careful and to think about that which is virtuous along with many other good attributes of biblical perspective.
Philippians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
In the marriage setting the woman that lacks virtue brings a rottenness to the table.
Proverb 12:4 A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
Ladies, are you a crown to your husband or are you the one who brings trouble into the family? Are you the help meet and do you lift up your husband and bring security and strength and virtue to your marriage?
Virtue begins with Christ Jesus.
2Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
The choice is still yours,
