Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 26:13  The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. 14  As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. 15  The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. 16  The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

Here we find the person who again is wise in his own conceit. As we saw in yesterdays post the person wise in his own conceit is worse than a fool. Here we have a blend, a morphing of the same conceit in the sluggard the lazy person .

A man who is arrogant, and self - assuming and thinks himself to be superior than to receive instruction is beyond help; attache that to a sluggard and you have a person who is both unwise, unteachable and lazy.

The conceited person is an egotist who believes he knows it all when in fact he does not. The person who is wise in his own conceit is unteachable and is convinced of his own knowledge and loves his own ways.

The sluggard who is conceited is the one who makes excuses to be a sluggard. A lion is in the way is the excuse to hide from work, whereas the prosperous man will see through the problem and find a way to work. In other words, he makes excuses for not working. Usually those excuses never focus on himself but on others and circumstances or scenarios that can be overcome.

The conceited sluggard will enjoy his bed and linger loving his sleep while making many excuses he will turn upon his bed in slumber like a door on its hinges. Proverbs 20:13  Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

The conceited sluggard will be grieved when he is forced to eat food to his disliking; food which he did not procure. He will hide his hand in his bosom complaining of the menu provided thinking (in his conceit) that he deserves better.

While seven men can give him reasonable argument to change his life, the conceited sluggard will not hear.

Excuses, excuses, you hear them everyday, the sluggard will provide them if from work he’ll stay away.

Excuses, excuses, you hear them everyday, the devil will provide them if from God you’ll stay away.

There is no prosperity in excuses.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
