Morning Devotion: Read Luke - The Death of Jesus

Luke 23:44  And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45  And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46  And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. 47  Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48  And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49  And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

The sixth hour is twelve noon. There was a darkness over all, all the earth. My friend, without Jesus there will always be a darkness. Jesus is the light of the world. When that light is ignored or rejected there will be a great darkness in the heart.

From the sixth hour (12:00 noon) until the ninth hour (3:00pm) there was darkness, why was there darkness?

The books of Matthew and Mark give us the reason.

Matthew 27:45  Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

There has never ever been a separation between Jesus and God, for Jesus is God. However, in this one instance, the hypostatic union was broken. Jesus was separated from the Father because of your sin and my sin.

Remember, the sin of the whole world was placed upon the Lord Jesus.

Isaiah 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Jesus was sent to bear your sin and pay for your sin on the cross.

John 1:29  The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

When the sin of the world was placed upon Jesus, and because there is no darkness in God, there was a separation.

1John 1:5  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

That is why Jesus cried Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? The horror of separated from God was too much.

My friend, sin will always separate you from God.

Isaiah 59:2  But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Micah 3:4  Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.

Jesus was separated from God the Father and a darkness prevailed over all the earth. There was great agony when the separation took place, that is why Jesus cried my God my God way has thou forsaken me. It was a dark time for Jesus and for the world. We will see that out of agony and out of darkness, came victory.

Yes, Jesus died and was buried and rose from the dead and is now seated at the right of God the Father. One day Jesus will return in great victory. That time is soon.

Will you be ready? or are you still in darkness?

If you die without Jesus Christ as your saviour you will die in darkness and you will be separated from God for all eternity.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
