Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 18:12  Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

Proverbs 16:18  Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Luke 14:11  For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

All through the scriptures our Lord reveals the brutal truth about salvation. Haughtiness and pride and self-righteousness never ever lead to salvation. In fact those very things are cause of destruction and the pathway to hell.

There is now evidence in scripture where God ever saved a person or peoples who hearts were lifted up in pride and haughtiness.

I am reminded of the first message Peter ever preached after being filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

His message was toward those who through pride and haughtiness crucified our Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 2:23  Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

Upon realizing their sin and their dilemma of being cursed they asked a very important question.

Acts 2:37  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Peter’s response, totally given by the Lord, was astoundingly true and provocative.

Acts 2:38  Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40  And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

The results were great as God worked in the hearts of the prideful haughty spirits of each individual.

Acts 2:41  Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

My friend, when God’s word is presented to you how do you respond? Do you respond in pride and haughtiness or is there a humbleness in your heart willing and ready to receive the truth and salvation?

Remember, God does not send people to hell because they reject Him, Man is destined for hell regardless. God simply offers the way of escape from hell through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ.

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
