Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time
Luke 18:31 Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. 32 For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: 33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. 34 And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
The main reason Jesus came to earth was to die for you, to pay the sin debt that and I owed.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
He paid the debt He did not owe and I owed a debt I could not pay. The innocent gave his life for the guilty.
Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
The sad part of this text and the other two times Jesus spoke of is the fact that the disciples did not understand what Jesus was talking about. They could not comprehend the great work Jesus was about to do.
Luke 2:50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
Luke 9:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
Luke 18:34 And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.
Even Peter, without understanding rebuked the Lord for saying such things.
Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.
Their understanding was clarified when Jesus rose from the dead.
Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
My dear friend the main theme of the scriptures is Jesus Christ and His efficacious work and shedding of blood on Calvary’s cross the payment of your sin debt that you might be saved and have a relationship with God the Father.
I truly hope you understand that one great truth. Your eternal life depends upon it.
John 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
1John 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
The choice is still yours,
