Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Unworthy Servants

Luke 17:7  But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say unto him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? 8  And will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunken; and afterward thou shalt eat and drink? 9  Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. 10  So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

Humility is the word for the day. I have often heard people say, you deserve this or you deserve that. There seems to be a culture that declares “it all about me.” I want what I want and I want it now is the mindset of people today. The mindset is an attitude of self deserved instant gratitude. People want to be applauded and lifted up and congratulated and praised for what ever they do. facebook, messenger, snapchat and a host of other online venues are great at promoting this ideology.

In our text we find the Lord instructing His disciples, His apostles, something very different. He is teaching humility in servitude.

Remember, this is the Lord speaking; He is the one who ultimately goes to the cross of calvary without pomp and glory. He is despised and rejected of men and mocked and ridiculed and spit upon and beaten and never once said, “I don’t deserve this.”

While we know our Lord did not deserve the cross, yet, He chose the cross. He was a humble servant in His service for God.

Philippians 2:7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

We have the same opportunity to serve the Lord Jesus Christ because we know it is our duty. We do so because we love Him who first moved us, thus, duty is manifested by love.

1John 4:19  We love him, because he first loved us.

Although we serve the Lord because it is our duty, knowing there is little thanks in this world, one day the Lord will reward His own.

Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

1Corinthians 3:13  Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14  If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

1 Corinthians 10:31  Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 5:9  Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.

When we realize it is not about us and all about God we can accomplish much for Him.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
