Morning Devotion: Read Luke - Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
Luke 17:11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: 13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
If we may speak allegorically, we will find that Leprosy pictures sin in ones life. It is an ugly, putrefying, stenchful disease that leaves one outside the camp. For everyone with leprosy had to live on the outside of town far away from others to they would not get contract the plague.
Upon first hint of the plague they were to present themselves to the priest and he would examine him for the plague. Read Leviticus 13 and 14 to understand this procedure.
Leviticus 13:3 And the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of the flesh: and when the hair in the plague is turned white, and the plague in sight be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is a plague of leprosy: and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.
The Lord God of heaven sees every person for who they really are. He sees the sin of leprosy in their hearts and minds which affects their actions and life.
In our text we have ten men who, upon seeing the true hope of their dilemma cries out for mercy. Jesus is always willing to give mercy upon those who seek him.
We find the Lord telling these lepers to go and show themselves to the priest, following O.T. law. They were obedient to the command and upon their way they were cleansed. I am sure they were thrilled with their newly changed bodies. No longer would they be ostracized from their loved ones or friends. No longer would they have to live outside the city hoping for people to feed them. Upon cleansing, everything changed for the better.
Then one of them turned back and glorified God for his wonderful new change. Only one of them came back and fell down on his face and worshipped the Lord.
Luke 17:15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Not only was this man cleansed, but, his faith in Jesus, made him whole both physically and spiritually.
Jesus our Lord asked an important question. “Where are the nine?” Where are the rest of those who received a blessing from the Lord? The nine never returned to thank the Lord or worship the Lord.
Do we live in a society of ungratefulness? Do we live in a society that expects and even demands from God and never gives back?
My Christian friend, where are you in your relationship to God? No doubt you are glad the Lord saved you and glad you are a new creature in Christ, but are you living a life that glorifies and worships the Lord?
My unsaved friend, would you come to Jesus and let Him cleanse you of your sin?
1John 1:7b… the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
The choice is still yours,
