Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 23:4  Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. 5  Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

O, how often have we been warned against making the amassing of money and stuff the priority of the heart.

The phrase, “set thine eyes upon” is indicative of coveting the things that would take priority over God and His will. The eye affects the heart.

It is the godly man who, whether rich of not, sets His eyes upon the Lord making Him the priority of the heart.

1Timothy 6:6  But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8  And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 9  But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10  For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11  But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

Think about this for a moment, Adam and Eve had everything yet they had nothing by our standards, they had no banks, no money, no gold and silver, no merchandise. They had all the world to their own, they had the garden of Eden they had the Lord who personally communed with them. They had everything.

In a wisp of time, in a moment of covetousness, they lost it all. (Read Genesis chapter 3.)

Genesis 3:6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Genesis 3:23  Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

It is certain that riches fly away either by the circumstances of life or by death for it is certain you cannot take them with you.

We need the Lord and His discipline, His guidance, His word to keep our hearts and minds centred on that which is pleasing to Him.

The greatest wealth you can ever have is the wealth of a wonderful relationship with God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  In that relationship we find our sins forgiven and heaven and all its glories.

Never sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the temporary.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
