Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs
Proverbs 23:19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
82 times the word heart is mentioned in the book of Proverbs.
765 word heart is mentioned in the scriptures with variations like hard hearted and hearts etc. the word is mentioned 895 times. Nowhere in the bible do we ever find the principle nor concept of one allowing their heart to guide them. We do not find the principle of following your heart. “Follow your heart” is the slogan many will promote. God does not teach man to follow his heart.
No one can fully know their heart for their heart is deceitful.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Proverbs 2:10 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
Proverbs 3:1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
Our verse for today tells us to guide our hearts not follow our hearts. God tells us to guide our hearts in the way.
Proverbs 23:19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
To guide ones heart means one has to restrain their heart and control their hearts and monitor their hearts, not follow something that they cannot understand.
Proverbs 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
What is the way? The answer is very simple; guide your heart in God’s way, God’s will, God’s word. My friend, it is the way of the Lord. That is wisdom.
Acts 18:25a This man was instructed in the way of the Lord;
It is the way of God.
Acts 18:26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
Do you know the way of the Lord? Jesus is the way - John 14:6
Do you follow your heart and its desires and wants and wishes, or do you trust the Lord with all your heart?
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
Most of the world, including religions, and denominations follow their own hearts rather than the Lord.
What are you following? Are you following “the Way?”
The choice is still yours,
