Morning Devotion: Read Proverbs

Proverbs 23:20  Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: 21  For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

In very simple terms, this passage means: don’t be given over to be a party boy or girl. In the grand scheme of things the person who spends much of their time partying involving themselves in revelry are distracted from what is going on around them. This type of lifestyle is exactly what the bible declares will happen in the last days.

2Timothy 3:1  This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

In our text our Lord says to refrain from being with those who would be such. We find the phrase “be not among,” meaning don’t go there and do that with them. It will eventually lead to trouble.

The Prophet Isaiah gives us the results of the partying lifestyle.

Isaiah 5:11  Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them! 12  And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands. 13  Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.

Remember, these instructions, for life, are given by Solomon to his son.

Proverbs 1:1  The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; 2  To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; 3  To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; 4  To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

Proverbs 1:8  My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

How many young people have had their lives ruined by following the party lifestyle? How many older people regret waisting their lives and their fortunes by embracing that which does not provide equity in life?

Keep your mind and heart sober for the Lord Jesus Christ.

1Peter 1:13  Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

1Peter 4:7  But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

Proverbs 23:20  Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: 21  For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Our Lord Jesus Christ was always sober and conscious of the will of God the Father; are you?

1Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

The choice is still yours,
