Morning Devotion: Read Luke - The Parable of Persistent Prayer

Luke 18:1  And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2  Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3  And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4  And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5  Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 6  And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. 7  And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8  I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

The are now, and will be more so in the end times, unjust judges. There are, even now, judges that fear not God nor regard man. The rule of man’s law is their master rather than the Law of God. Man’s laws are made by men; God laws are made by God.

God’s laws are called the Torah in the Hebrew language. Man’s law is derived by men.

In our text, we have a dear woman who had an adversary. The bible does not teach what sort of adversary it was, simply that her advisory was against her and was vengeful.

This woman went to the unjust judge seeking to be avenged of her adversary. He would not listen to her complaint. However, she was relentless and persistent in the settlement of her plight.

The unjust judge finally gave in because of her continual coming to him.

Luke 18:4  And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5  Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

Now, our Lord Jesus makes an important point concerning prayer. He tells us that if the unjust judge was willing to make concessions for this dear woman, would not our just and righteous God hear and answer our prayers.

Luke 18:7  And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8  I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Men are often given to fainting and giving up on God and forgoing prayer when prayer is the ultimate course to take because it is communicating with God.

Luke 18:1  And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

David said in Psalms 27:13  “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.”

Philippians 4:6  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Psalms 102:17  He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.

Don’t give up on praying, don’t give up on God.

Psalms 55:16  As for me, I will call upon God; and the LORD shall save me. 17  Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

My dear Christian friend, do not give up praying, God will always answer your prayer. (Pray without ceasing.)

There is one prayer that God will always give an answer of yes, that is the prayer of the dear sinner seeking God’s salvation in Jesus.

Romans 10:9  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Romans 10:13  For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
